Scoliosis Treatment | Loy Chiropractic Arts Solana Beach

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a sideways or “lateral” curving of the spine. While the causes of scoliosis are not clearly known, it usually begins in childhood — while the bones of the spine are still growing. The only way to accurately diagnose scoliosis is to take a spinal X-ray.

Scoliosis tends to be more common among girls. Some early signs are: uneven shoulder heights, changes in posture, and loss of structural balance. Symptoms of scoliosis may include back pain, neck pain and muscle stiffness. These symptoms can be mistakenly attributed to “growing pains” leading to a delay in taking action when the condition is most manageable.

Without proper diagnosis and timely corrective care, the spinal curve will nearly always increase over time. Mild scoliosis presents a significant risk of progression, but once the lateral curvature exceeds 20 degrees, that risk increases dramatically. In advanced cases of scoliosis, surgery may be required.

Early Detection is Key

Dr. Loy of Loy Chiropractic Arts in Solana Beach, has cared for dozens of children with varying degrees of scoliosis. The success of Advanced Corrective Care is much higher in cases where the condition is detected and treated early.

In many cases, the progression of scoliosis can be halted through a combination of regular chiropractic adjustments, diligently performed home exercises, and specialized massage therapy techniques. Regular chiropractic check-ups help protect children from advanced scoliosis and other spinal health problems.
